72 year-old John Nelson appeared in Missoula Justice Court on Monday afternoon for allegedly firing a weapon at a woman in his home. She told authorities she was afraid he was going to kill her.

The incident occurred at a residence on Bel Vue Drive on Friday when Nelson got into an argument with the victim, identified as Jane Doe. At one point, Nelson pointed a silver handgun at the victim and she pulled a blanket over her head, and then Nelson fired the weapon.

Deputy Missoula County Attorney Amber Henning asked Judge Marie Anderson for a bond of $50,000, due to the continuing danger posed to the victim.

"The defendant is charged with assault with a weapon after he fired a gun at the victim," Henning said. "This occurred in the victim's bedroom, and it was apparent that rounds had been fired. The defendant has a limited criminal history, but a high bond is needed to protect the victim and the community."

Appearing via video from the Missoula County Jail, Nelson's public defender said Nelson, who is retired and has limited financial resources, had sustained a brain injury and was undergoing treatment by a psychiatrist.

Judge Anderson set bail at $25,000, and ordered Nelson to appear again in court on October 31.
