37 year-old Shane Childress appeared in Missoula Justice Court on Tuesday charged with three felonies, including attempted deliberate homicide, after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend in the head with a knife.

Missoula County Attorney Kirsten Pabst explained the request for $250,000 bail.

"We are asking the court to set bail in the amount of $250,000," Pabst said. "There are three reasons why we ask for bail, first that the individual poses a threat to society which is evident by the charges. He is a definite flight risk, as he has no ties to the community. In addition, there's a risk of either destruction of evidence or tampering with witnesses, which is another one of the charges."

Pabst also apprised the judge of Childress' extensive criminal record.

"Mr. Childress is a persistent felony offender," she said. "He is currently out on bail in Butte-Silver Bow County for a drug charge that involved exposure of methamphetamine to his young children. In that instance, he posted a substantial bond, and so these crimes in Missoula were committed after he already posted a substantial bond. So, the $250,000 bail is mostly to protect the community."

According to court documents, Childress has been charged with three felonies. Attempted Deliberate Homicide, Assault With a Weapon, and Tampering With Evidence, along with a misdemeanor charge of Partner of Family Member Assault. Details of the incident can be found in the attached charging documents.

Judge Orzech placed Childress back in the Missoula County Jail on $250,000 bail. His next court appearance will be July 16.
