The trees in a natural bowl on Ward Mountain continue to burn in the remnants of the Roaring Lion Fire southwest of Hamilton. Smoke was again rising above the area August 16 and on the morning of August 17.

Bitterroot National Forest officials expect the fire to continue burning in the high elevation of the mountain until the end of fire season, when the weather will shut it down.

Yesterday, helicopters were again dousing hot spots on the edges of the Ward bowl, continuing the firefighters' plan to keep the blaze inside the steep edges of the rocky feature. Aircraft are expected to be used again today.

Meanwhile, crews are continuing mop-up on the other sections of the fire and around homes. Lookouts are positioned to monitor the fire.
