A fire that residents say began around 5:30 a.m. at 909 Pattee Creek Drive, left many locals out in the rain.

One eyewitness said he heard what sounded like a fight, looked out his window and saw flames and smoke in another section of the apartment complex. Soon, police were on the scene.

Original reports indicated that people may have been trapped inside the building. Missoula police confirm that they had to break windows and remove people from the apartment building where the fire was active and they also evacuated two adjacent structures. It is unclear if anyone was seriously injured.

By 6:30, most of the fire had been knocked down after two response alarms.  Superficially, it does not appear that the fire did much damage to the roof and exterior, but the interior is likely significantly damaged.

At least three fire engines, two ambulances, and multiple police cars were on scene. Pattee Creek Dr. was blocked off near the intersection of Spartan and Pattee Creek Drive.

It is still unclear what caused the fire and an investigation is underway.
