Adios Cathedral
I've been a fan of Cathedral since day one. 1993's The Ethereal Mirror is doom groovy and amazing and I became an instant fan (in fact, I still keep a few tracks from this record in my workout rotation). If you watched Headbanger's Ball back in the day, you might recognize this song:
Sadly all good things must come to an end, and so it is with Cathedral...
It’s Like 9/11, but in Space
This is kind of dumb, kind of awesome, and well argued. Who knew Darth Vader was the Bin Laden of his galaxy?
Finally, a Reason to Visit Michigan.
The state of Michigan takes a lot of crap in the media. Detroit, Flint, and other rust-belt cities usually make the list of worst towns in the US.
But now you have a reason to visit. Ladies and gentleman, I give you the Baco, available this summer at West Michigan Whitecaps games (they play just outside of Grand Rapids, so in theory your wallet should be safe)...
The United States Sucks at Drinking
Let's see . . . skyrocketing debt. Political gridlock. We suck at math. Our health care costs are astronomical relative to other industrialized nations. This all sounds pretty miserable, which makes it even more surprising that the US doesn't crack the top 10 on CNN's list of Top 10 drinking nations...
Think Mom and Dad Got You A Puppy Because They Love You? Think Again.
Just imagine: You've always wanted a dog. You bug your folks about getting one, they fight you on it, and then one day you arrive home, discovering a happy puppy in your living room. Yay!
Don't get too happy. It's quite possible ma & pa got you a special dog . . ...
Dazed and Confused is Almost Old Enough to Drink
Perchance you caught my "holy horse s**t I'm old" Iron Maiden blog last week. As if that isn't enough to send me into midlife crisis mode, I see that one of my favorite movies is turning 20! The cast and crew of Dazed and Confused recently had a gathering in Austin, Texas, to celebrate the film's birthday (even though most of the actors/actresses that went onto bigger things later in the
Hide Yer Nut(ella)
A quickie but goodie for the weekend: The New York Times reports that Columbia University is reconsidering its decision to offer Nutella in dining halls. Why? According to the article, students have added Nutella to their "eh, f**k it, I'll just take this back to my room" list:
“People take silverware, cups and plates, and that adds up over the course of a year to a lot of money,” he sai
Iron Maiden’s Maiden England: 1988, part II
I'm probably showing my age here (15 year old sense of humor, 36 year old body) but I'm geeked for Iron Maiden's re-release of their classic 1988 concert video Maiden England. Here's the trailer:
This is like reliving my childhood (if you're a marketing or advertising major, remember this always: people WILL pay to recaputre their childhood)...
Taxes and Strippers, Part II
Recall from last month my tale of a New York strip club's attempt to avoid paying taxes on income from lap dances.
(maybe that should read 'tail,' since we're talking about strippers . . . but I digress . . .)
The subject for today's edition of 'Taxes and Strippers' comes from the TaxProf Blog, which addresses whether or not "makin' it rain" (look it up if you don't know) at the strip cl
Anthrax, Amorphis, and Mad Season: Three Bands, One Blog.
I popped over to Nuclear Blast Europe's YouTube channel to check out the new Anthrax cover of Thin Lizzy's "Jailbreak" (the new Anthrax covers CD "Anthems" is out in a couple weeks) . . .
So after my Anthrax song finishes up, next on the playlist is this little gem, "Hopeless Days," from Amorphis:
I knew nothing of Amorphis prior to yesterday...
Taylor Swift Song or Self Help Book?
First, a note about the photo: Hotwife thinks Taylor Swift looks like an alien (and, as it turns out, 145 people on Facebook agree). I like the picture because it looks like something Georgia O'Keeffe might dream up while watching Star Trek (Georgia is the one whose flower paintings remind people of vaginas)...
