Early in January, five men wearing black hoodies entered the Jay's Mart convenience store and savagely beat store clerk Patrick Bendig with baseball bats, causing extensive injuries.

Monday, May 20, one of the defendants in that case, Turedon Thibodeaux, 19, was sentenced by District Judge Karen Townsend to 40 years in prison with 30 years suspended.

KECI-TV reported that during the hearing Bendig spoke to Thibodeaux directly for the first time since the attack that left him partially disabled and walking with a cane. Bendig thanked Thibodeaux for owning up to the crime. Bendig also told Thibodeaux that he prays for him to have a better life.

The four other defendants in the case still have not entered pleas.
