Mastodon are one of the most electrifying bands of the modern age, defying classification and lumped into a group all their own with a style that cannot be mistaken for any other band. As the group prepares the successor to 2014's Once More 'Round the Sun, guitarist and co-vocalist Brent Hinds has revealed we could be receiving a double dose of Mastodon.

“It’s shaping up to be a double album,” Hinds told Guitar World, going on to tout his own contributions, adding, “One is an album I wrote myself and recorded with Brann [Dailor, drums] and Troy [Sanders, bass and vocals] during the Once More 'Round the Sun sessions." Speaking more about what he wrote, Hinds continued, "My part is called Cold Dark Place, and it has to do with a nasty breakup that I went through. I wrote some pretty dark, beautiful, spooky, funky, ethereal, melancholy music, which also sounds like the Bee Gees a little bit [laughs]."

Moving on to the second half of the forthcoming release, the guitarist stated, “The other guys are writing another album, which I haven’t even heard yet so I can’t tell you what it sounds like. But I’ll come in to give some noodle-y leads here and there. And for sure I’ll be recording with my new signature Flying V… while standing on top of a chair with a werewolf mask on. And that’s not a joke; I really do that. I never sit down to record. You can’t sit down and play a Flying V, everyone knows that.”

Hinds has partnered with Epiphone to develop his custom Silverburst Flying V guitar which will feature Lace® USA Brent Hinds Signature Hammer Claws™ Humbuckers and Grover® Rotomatics™ 18:1 ratio machine heads. More information can be found at Epiphone's website.

The guitarist has a busy year lined up, rehearsing with Giraffe Tongue Orchestra for their debut show at the Reading Festival in England this August. The band, also featuring Alice in Chains singer William DuVall and the Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weinman, will release their first album, Broken Lines, on Sept. 23 through Partysmasher / Cooking Vinyl Inc.
