KGVO news has learned that Ward 2 city councilor Harlan Wells will be resigning from office as of January 1 to take an administrative job with the State of Montana.

Few details were available, but Wells will step down and be moving to Helena, working with a state agency in an administrative role.

Communications Director for the City of Missoula, Ginny Merriam, said the council will ask for applications from the ward, and then appoint someone to fill Wells' term, at which point he or she can run for the office, should they so choose.

Wells said he hopes the city council will appoint a replacement that mirrors his conservative values.

Wells has been at odds with Mayor John Engen and many of his fellow city council members over various matters, most recently the condemnation and acquisition of Mountain Water Company.
