The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the National Forest Service, and the Carbon County Sheriff's Department are attempting to find out who stole explosives from a National Forest Service bunker about two miles south of Red Lodge

"There was approximately 559 pounds of high explosives stolen from the United States Forest Service's explosives bunker, said ATF Public Information Officer Bradley Beyersdorf.  "We have various impulsion type explosives  that were stolen as well as cast boosters and detonating cord . . . those are the items that we know are missing at this time."

The fact that the explosives were missing was only discovered during the first week of May, but Beyersdorf says they were stolen sometime in April. Apparently, explosives thefts aren't that rare in the Rocky Mountain north.

"When you have the mining industry and other industries with the need for explosives, it's not uncommon for us to come across explosive thefts," Beresdorf said. "At this point were still looking into what exactly happened. We're offering a $5,000 reward for information that will lead to the arrest and prosecution of the individual or individuals that may have perpetrated this crime."
