At around 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, the Missoula Fire Department responded to a fire at the Howard Johnson Motel on Brooks Street.

Captain Dick Ware with the Missoula Fire Department said the fire was in a single ground floor room in the motel, and no occupants were in the room at the time of the fire.

"A call came in at about 10 a.m. this morning, and we sent three city engine companies and a truck company to the fire," Ware said. "When they got there, they found a room involved in a fire and they quickly knocked it down. They checked for occupants and there was no one inside. No adjacent rooms were involved, so it was a pretty quick fire."

Ware also said there was no structural damage to the single room in the motel.

"It's mostly smoke damaged interior contents that's full of, you know, smoke," Ware said. "Right now that's all we know."

The fire is being investigated by the Missoula Fire Department's Fire Prevention Bureau.

As of 2:45 p.m., the cause of the fire was still under investigation. Ware said a report of the investigation should be wrapped up by the end of the day.
