Focus on the Moon from A New Weather Satellite

This photo has been making the rounds on the internet. And it's not a normal photo you'd see from a weather satellite.

This is from the GOES-16 weather satellite for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, showing off.

The GOES-R was successfully launched in November last year from Cape Canaveral and was renamed GOES-16 when it settled into orbit.

The engineers have been fiddlin' with the focus on a battery of cameras and sensors that will be bringing weather observations to a new level.

The view is from 22,300 miles up and the zoom on this particular camera even brings the moon's surface into fine focus. Not too much weather up there, though.

Another high-tech satellite will become GOES-17 when it launches in 2018. Be ready for cool new photos on your evening weather reports.
