The premiere of the documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck was at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theater on Tuesday night (April 21). Courtney Love and her daughter Frances Bean Cobain, along with director Brett Morgen were on hand for the film’s premiere. In a surprise move, the oft media shy Frances Bean spoke to the crowd about the film.

She served as executive producer of the clip and, according to Yahoo, had this to say to the audience: “The reason I’ve been able to watch it six times is because of the film Brett made. I didn’t know Kurt ... He was a human being and I think that’s been lost within the romanticism and the myth of him and his story. What this movie will provide, hopefully, is a real understanding of who he was. And I feel like he’d be really proud to have this movie made about him. So I’d like to thank Brett a lot.”

Her speech wasn’t the only thing to make news that night. Some tabloid outlets criticized the 22-year-old’s appearance at the event, to which Cobain defended herself. She wrote on Twitter, “Apparently I’m not well because I dressed like Morticia Addams last night and am pale? Okay media spin cycle, okay. #slownewsday.” My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way and Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams both commended Cobain on Twitter for defending herself and having her own sense of style.

You can watch the Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck documentary May 4 on HBO.
