Green Day Deliver ‘Affordable’ Version of ‘Good Riddance’ + Bonus Tracks for ‘Late Show With Stephen Colbert’

You may remember Green Day appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert a few weeks back performing their recent single “Still Breathing,” but the band did quite a bit more during their late night stop. A longtime fan of Green Day, a “green bean” as he calls himself, Stephen Colbert asked Green Day if they could perform his favorite song during an appearance, but in a bit Colbert revealed he couldn’t afford it, so they had a little fun with “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).”

“I asked if we could sing my favorite Green Day song, ‘Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),’ and they said, ‘Absolutely, if you pay for it,’ and I said, ‘No way,’ which brings us to the first installment of an exciting new segment,” explained Colbert, setting up the segment “Lyrics We Can Afford to Songs We Love.”

As you can see in the video above, it starts off just as you might expect with Billie Joe Armstrong on acoustic guitar and Late Show band leader Jon Batiste joining in on melodica. But once it comes to the vocal portion of the song, Colbert replaces the lyrics to “Good Riddance” with the public domain classic “Camptown Ladies” from Stephen Foster. The rest of the band gets in on it as well, with Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool adding “ah-doo-dah-day” backing vocals. Surprisingly, it works well, with Tre Cool exclaiming “Nailed it” at the end of the performance.

Meanwhile, Green Day also shot a longer piece called “Bonus Tracks” for The Late Show as well. It includes a behind-the-scenes look at Green Day’s appearance on the show, interviews with the band members and performances of “Revolution Radio,” “Forever Now” and “Ordinary World” that weren’t aired during the regular broadcast. Check it out below.
