To celebrate the release of their 12th studio album, Revolution Radio, Green Day appeared as special guest performers on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night (Oct. 6). The punk-rock trio jammed the album’s lead single, “Bang Bang” for the Tonight Show crowd.

Green Day have been jamming on late night talk shows for over 20 years. A quick YouTube search will find the California act performing tracks like “Brain Stew” and “Waiting” on The Tonight Show. This time, it was “Bang Bang” that Green Day unholstered on the television staple, with drummer Tre Cool whipping vinyl copies of Revolution Radio into the studio audience as the song’s finale.

“It’s about the culture of mass shootings that happens in America mixed with the narcissistic social media,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told Rolling Stone about “Bang Bang.” “There’s this sort of rage happening, but it’s also now being filmed and we all have ourselves under surveillance. To me, that is so twisted. To get into the brain of someone like that was freaky. It freaked me out. After I wrote it, all I wanted to do was get out of my brain because it just freaked me out.”

Armstrong added, “I don’t know why someone would ever do something that horrific because I know I never would. It’s just sort of meant to also reflect the culture a little bit without sounding pretentious.”

Green Day also stopped by The Howard Stern Show this week to perform a mini concert. You can check out audio of the band playing "Holiday," "Welcome to Paradise" and more below.
