A homeless woman from Missoula has reported being sexually assaulted in a local motel room by a known male acquaintance.

Missoula Police Detective Sergeant and Public Information Officer Travis Welsh said the alleged assault took place between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. on Friday, April 18.

"The suspect is an adult male who is a known acquaintance that she had been spending the evening with," Welsh said. "She was able to leave the motel room and get to a phone where she could call the police. Detectives were called and at this point interviews have been completed, but at this time, no arrests have yet been made."

Welsh said the alleged assault occurred in a motel room in the 1000 block of East Broadway.

"The woman is homeless, and has been on the street for a little while," Welsh said. "The male was in a motel room, but it is unknown if he had a residence or not. The woman was provided the opportunity to make a full statement, but I don't know specifically if the male has done the same or not, or if he has been located."

Welsh says the investigation is ongoing by Missoula Police detectives.

"Potentially, there are medical exams to be completed, and there are also witness statements that we want to obtain," Welsh said. "All this must be completed before we can present the case to the Missoula County Attorney's office for potential charging decisions based on the facts that are uncovered."
