I’m going to begin by saying that I dearly love my family. Doesn’t everyone love their families? There is nothing better than getting together for holidays and spending time with the people you love, but rarely get to see.

For me this holiday season was extra special because all three of my siblings, and their families, along with my parents, along with my family, were together. This doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, it’s really loud and really fun.

I know they say there is no such thing as too much of a good thing, but I think they (whoever “they” are) may be wrong. At least when it applies to family. No matter how much you love them, and love to spend time with them, there is something so nice about getting back to everyday life. For one thing, it is much quieter.

It seems there is always so much excitement and so many things going on when my family comes to visit that I usually need a vacation from the vacation that I just took to spend time with them. Here are a few things I like to do to help myself relax after so much family fun.

    Hang out at home

Take the next weekend after the relatives have all left and just don’t do anything. Don’t clean the house, don’t go cook anything extravagant, and don’t make any plans. Just enjoy a low key weekend at home with nowhere to be, nothing to do, and no one to see. The only thing on your to-do list for the weekend is enjoy your own little family.

Have some alone time with your honey

Family get-togethers are great for socializing with loved ones, but not so great for spending any kind of quality time with your spouse. A nice date night with just the two of you is just what the doctor ordered after a week full of screaming kids and half drunk uncles.

    Eat normally

When trying to feed massive amounts of people, massive amounts of food is needed. I always seem to eat twice as much when gathering with family than I do on a normal day, not to mention the added alcoholic beverages I tend to ingest that I normally wouldn’t. Just getting back into your everyday groove is a great form of recovery.

Go to bed early and/or sleep in

It seems that when family is around there are many late night conversations, or board games, and kids always waking up at the crack of dawn. This leaves little time to keep on my much needed beauty sleep.

    Do something by yourself

After spending so much time talking to, and being around multiple family members, I need a few hours, and sometimes even a whole day, by myself to just unwind and hear only myself think for a while.
