A structure fire damaged an apartment complex on Kemp Street just before midnight on Friday.

Battalion Chief Steve Paske with the Missoula City Fire Department said the call came in at about 11:40 p.m. and multiple agencies responded to the blaze.

"We had two engines and one truck, and Missoula Rural Fire responded along with city police, Missoula Emergency Services and Northwestern Energy to shut off the power to the apartment," Paske said. "When we arrived, smoke was found throughout the structure, and we had flames coming out of the kitchen. Evidently, three people in the apartment downstairs heard the fire alarm upstairs and were able to exit their apartment safely."

Paske said once firefighters assessed the situation, they were able to bring the fire under control quickly.

"Dense smoke had rapidly enveloped the upstairs apartment, and we aggressively attacked the fire and knocked it down quickly," he said. "Thankfully, no one was hurt in the fire and our inspectors are still determining the cause, which resulted in an estimated $15,000 in damage."
