John Bonham is set to be honored with a statue in his hometown of Redditch, England after years of campaigning from his sister Deborah to erect the memorial. Pending approval of “a few amendments,” the bronze remembrance will be unveiled in time for what would have been the late Led Zeppelin drummer’s 70th birthday next May.

“How absolutely thrilled I am that this is happening in Redditch, Deborah said in a brief BBC interview, which can be seen below. “We just got planning permission, so I’m absolutely thrilled; we’re going to have a John Bonham memorial – brilliant.”

According to the Redditch Advertiser, the majority of the funds for the memorial, by renowned British sculptor Mark Richards, have been raised thanks to a private donation. The John Bonham Memorial Fund was started in 2013 in order to raise money for the tribute. Plans were approved by the city council last night (Oct. 11).

The memorial will have an arc shaped footprint and be nearly six feet high at its highest point, 16 feet wide with a depth of just over four feet. It’s proposed weight will be more than 5,512 pounds. Fixed onto a concrete platform, the statue will have a wheelchair friendly path around it and is designed to have a 360 degree viewing spectrum.

Bonham was the thunderous backbone for the legendary rock outfit and was born in Redditch, which is about 15 miles south of Birmingham. He died under tragic circumstances in September 1980, bringing the band to a premature end.
