Iconic British soul singer/songwriter Joe Cocker died today after a battle with lung cancer and an undisclosed illness, according to the BBC. He was 70.

Cocker's agent confirmed the passing and said, "It will be impossible to fill the space he leaves in our hearts." Most well-known for his gritty rendition of the Beatles 'With a Little Help From My Friends' (which you might remember as the theme song to 'The Wonder Years'), Cocker began his career singing in the pubs of Sheffield in the '60s. He also found massive success with his duet Jennifer Warnes on the Grammy- and Oscar-winning 'Up Where We Belong' from the soundtrack to 1982's 'An Officer and a Gentleman.'

He released 22 albums through 2012's 'Fire it Up' and is survived by his wife of 27 years, a step-daughter, two grandchildren and a brother.
