Loudwire Podcast #16 – Max Cavalera Celebrates 20-Plus Years of ‘Roots’

It’s time for Episode 16 of the Loudwire Podcast! For this edition of the podcast, we sat down with Max Cavalera to delve into the history of Sepultura’s legendary experiment Roots.

We caught up with Max in the basement of Gramercy Theatre right before he and Iggor Cavalera took the stage on their ‘Return to Roots’ tour. Since the brothers have been performing the album in its entirety, we decided to go back more than 20 years to hear about the making of Roots, including the Cavalera’s journey into the Brazilian rainforest to collaborate with the Xavante tribe.

Max originally wanted to visit the Kayapo tribe, but after being advised not to for his own safety, the Xavantes were suggested. The natives were extremely welcoming to Sepultura, even liking the guys’ tattoos, long hair and metal garb. Max even told us a hilarious story about producer Ross Robinson’s failed attempt to get the Xavantes more amped up while recording.

Max is the type to keep his family close. Managed by his wife and constantly jamming and touring with his kids, Cavalera spoke about the importance of family in his life. Max even described the 10-year period where he and Iggor didn’t speak, explaining how they’ve been making up for lost time.
