Montana Senator Max Baucus did not vote with his party or fellow Montana Senator Jon Tester Today on the hotly debated Manchin-Toomey amendment that would have broadened background checks for gun purchases. Baucus explained his vote this way:

"Montanans have told me loud and clear that they oppose any new gun controls. And I very much respect that - I agree. I represent Montana and I will oppose legislation that establishes new gun controls. I took an oath of office to support the Second Amendment of the Constitution, that I will do very faithfully. And frankly I think the administration can do a much better job enforcing the existing laws. If existing laws were enforced much more vigorously then I think some of the problems we’ve been seeing would not occur."

Three other democrats voted against the amendment. Namely, Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Mark Begich of Alaska, and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota. The final vote tally was 54 - 46 with 60 votes need to pass.

A group known as the Progressive Change Campaign will be taking out full page ads in local papers targeting all four Senators. Here is what the ads will look like:
