Rock ‘n’ roll and fashion are forever linked. Most self-respecting rockers sport t-shirts (or at least patches!) with their favorite band logos. Some even wear band tattoos, which are an accessory of the more permanent sort. Musicians often do the same. Now, Metallica frontman James Hetfield, who has always boasted an evolving yet infinitely cool look, which has settled into a rockabilly style at this point in his career, is taking it a step further, by partnering with Sutro Eyewear to craft a limited edition pair of shades.

The eyewear brand, headquartered in the band’s homebase of San Francisco, counted Hetfield among its fans, so it was only natural that the singer-guitarist worked with the company’s design team to create an ideal pair of shades to wear both on the road and at home.

According to a post on ‘Tallica’s official site, the frames feature the company’s patented, 3Click Hinge and Zeiss optics. What does that mean to you, as a consumer? Well the hinge is constructed of surgical grade stainless steel, meaning it is 10 times stronger than regular ol’ hinges, They won’t loosen over time or lose screws.

The Zeiss polycarbonate lenses block 100 percent of both UVA and UVB sun rays, so you’ll look good and your peepers will be well-protected. They are also coated to resist against scratches. Clearly, Hetfield and the designers worked to make sure the shades are the perfect marriage of form and function.

With a $219.99 price tag, they are a bit on the steep side, but hey, they are meant to last. Consider them an investment that’ll last as long as your vinyl copy of ‘Ride the Lightning.’ So, you might want a pair of these shades for the next time you’re swaying to Metallica’s beat at an outdoor concert before the day fades to black.

The tortoise shell frames are below. Stylin’ right?
