Missoula County Deputy Sheriff Jonathan Stinefort was involved in a shooting on Friday during a drug investigation.

Sheriff's department Public Information Officer Paige Pavalone said the shooting occurred at the intersection of Toole and Burton Streets..

"Our deputy made contact with the suspect who was seated in his vehicle," Pavalone said. "The suspect became uncooperative and was not following the deputy's instructions At one point, the suspect put his hands down and it appeared he may have been reaching for a gun, and then he tried to flee the scene while he was in his vehicle."

Pavalone described the shooting.

"At that point the deputy fired at the suspect as he was seated in his vehicle and did strike the suspect one time. The suspect was then transported to Missoula's St. Patrick Hospital with a non life-threatening injury."

The suspect who was shot was identified over the weekend as Harry Louis Steven VanPelt, 37, who received a bullet wound to his leg. VanPelt was released from St. Patrick Hospital on Saturday and is currently in the Missoula County Detention Center, although his name did not appear on the jail roster as of Sunday afternoon.

Missoula County Sheriff Carl Ibsen has requested that the Ravalli County Sheriff's Department conduct an investigation into the shooting. Deputy Stineford has been placed on administrative leave with pay during the investigation.
