Missoula Police arrested a man on Thursday night after a 911 call reported an assault in the 1500 block of South Seventh Street West. Police arrived around 6 p.m. and found the suspected assailant and the victim.

"When the officers entered they observed the victim sitting on a piece of furniture holding his head saying that it hurt," Welsh said. "EMS was called and that male was eventually transported to the hospital for treatment. The other male, identified as 27-year-old Paul Ekstedt, was taken into custody and is being held in relation to assault with a weapon."

The weapon in this case, appears to have been a baseball bat and the attack was both surprising and severe.

"It sounds like the males were acquainted with each other, as well as other people that were in the residence, and in fact the victim had come to the residence for the whole group of people to go have a meal together," Welsh said. "As they were all filling out, apparently Mr. Ekstedt grabbed a baseball bat and struck the victim male over the head with it."

While the victim was admitted to the hospital, Mr. Ekstedt was admitted to the Missoula County Jail on a felony assault with a weapon charge and a misdemeanor for obstructing justice.
