A Missoula woman called police over the weekend to report that she had been raped by an acquaintance.

Public Information Officer Travis Welsh said the woman called police on Saturday afternoon to report the sexual assault.

A 36 year-old female reported that she was raped by a 34 year-old  male acquaintance," Welsh said. "The actual rape took place on June 6th at about 2 a.m. The case is currently under investigation. All parties have been contacted, some interviews have taken place and the case remains active, although no arrest has yet been made."

Welsh said the police department's Special Victims Unit has made a positive difference in the way sexual assault victims are treated and interviewed.

"The soft room that we're using in some cases is a lot more comfortable," Welsh said. "It's not quite as intimidating, and I think we're seeing that when victims do come in to meet with us, they're able to do that and not feel that intimidation factor, and they're made to feel like they're actually assisting in the investigation, and not just the focus of it."

The rape charge is still under investigation by detectives with the Missoula Police Department.
