Missoula County School Board members have come under fire recently for approving a $20,000 per year raise for superintendent Alex Apostle. Now there are several school board seats up for election.

Director of Public Affairs for MCPS Leslie Brasfield said Tuesday that Nominating Petitions and Oath of Candidacy forms are now available for five seats that will be up for election on the Missoula County Public Schools Board of Trustees on Tuesday, May 7, 2013.

According to an MCPS news release;

The following seats are up for election:

  • § Three seats that represent both Elementary (K-8) and Secondary (high school) Districts on the Board through May 3, 2016. These K-12 seats are three-year terms. Anyone interested in these positions must live within the MCPS Elementary District boundary. These positions are currently held by Toni Rehbein, Scott Bixler and Joe Toth.
  • § One seat that represents both Elementary (K-8) and Secondary (high school) Districts on the Board for one year (through May 6, 2014), at which time the K-12 seat will be up for election for a three-year term. This seat is currently held by Scott Todd, who was appointed to the Board on Feb. 19, 2013 following the resignation of former Trustee Adam Duerk.
  • § One seat that represents the Lolo, Woodman and DeSmet districts on the Secondary (High School) Board. This seat is a three-year term. Candidates must reside in Election District “A,” which includes the attendance areas for Lolo, Woodman and DeSmet K-8 schools. This seat is currently held by Drake Lemm.

MCPS trustees are volunteer, non-paid positions. Trustees are requested to attend 3-4 monthly meetings (on average) that focus on curricula, policy, budget, administrative issues and other topics. Meetings are held during the day and evening.

There are 11 trustees on the school board. Seven seats represent both Elementary and Secondary Districts; four seats represent outlying communities and vote only on Secondary District issues.

Forms must be filed with the Missoula County Elections Office in the Missoula County Courthouse, 200 West Broadway, by 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 28. The forms may also be returned to the District for filing, but must be received in the District’s Business Building no later than 4 p.m. on March 28. Individuals filing for an elementary trustee position will need to collect 20 signatures from registered voters who live in the MCPS Elementary District boundary. Fewer signatures are required for individuals interested in the trustee position that represents Lolo, Woodman and DeSmet districts.
