A school parent in the South Hills neighborhood notified school officials that they had spotted a bear on Monday, October 7, so the district sent out a message to parents about the sighting.

Hatton Littman, Director of Technology and Communications for Missoula School District One said bear sightings at this time of years are common.

“It’s important to know that this time of year all around Montana, we’ve got wildlife interacting with people around their homes and around their school buildings,” Littman said. “We received a phone call this morning from one of our parents who saw a bear rummaging through some garbage on Monday afternoon, and the parent wanted the school to know there was a bear near a school in the South Hills area.”

Littman said parents need to realize that this is the time of year when wildlife is preparing for winter, and many animals may come closer to local homes than usual.

“We want to make sure that we’re reminding parents that at this time of year there’s always going to be wildlife moving around,” Littman said. “We gave our school parents a link to an informative website from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks that tracks bear and other wildlife information, so that parents can feel like they’re in the know about what’s going on in their area.”
