Three newly-formed committees are getting together this week to help the Missoula County Public Schools provide better protection for students and teachers.

Following the tragic school shootings at the Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Connecticut, Superintendent Alex Apostle asked for the public’s help in providing ideas for greater safety in Missoula schools.

The first of the committees, dealing with mental health issues, met Monday night. Tuesday the public safety committee will discuss various ideas on how to better organize communications between the schools and various first responder units, such as police and fire departments.

Wednesday night, the committee dealing with facility safety will meet to discuss various ideas on how to make the actual school buildings safer for students and teachers. All the meetings are held at the MCPS business building on South Avenue West, next to Sentinel High School at 5 p.m..

MCPS Public Affairs Director Leslie Brasfield says the public is welcome to attend any and all of the meetings.
