Modern Day Superhero University of New Hampshire’s Cameron Lyle

Most college athletes eat, sleep and breath their sport. They have worked hard to be able to compete in their sport at a college level, and many have received scholarships for their hard work and talent. Endless hours of training and practice consume a college athlete’s life. So, why would one such athlete give up his last chance to enjoy the sport he loves, and in his senior year no less? To save someone else’s life.

I’m sure when Cameron Lyle joined the bone marrow registry two years ago he never imagined he would be giving up his senior athletic season to save someone’s life, as there is only a one-in-five-million chance of a match to someone who isn’t a family relation. He has agreed to donate his bone marrow to a 28-year-old suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, who would only have six months to live without the transplant.

Lyle is a University of New Hampshire college athlete whose sports consist of the shot put, discus and hammer throw. His generous donation to save another man’s life means he will have to miss his final two meets of his career, including the America East Track and Field Championship which is a NCAA Division I conference meet.

I wonder how many other college athletes would be willing to give up their senior season in the sport that they love? He truly is a modern day hero. He is saving a man’s life through an act of kindness. Most of us will go through our lives and never be able to have an impact like that one another human being.

Lyle seems to be humble about the whole situation, and act like it isn’t a big deal, but to the on man whose life he is going to save, it is a big deal.

Lyle is the person who should be on a poster on our kids’ walls. He is the kind of person we should want our kids to grow up to be. He is the kind of person we should all strive to be. He is selfless, giving, humble and puts others; needs before his own. Doesn’t that describe every superhero you know?

Joy Larson is a mother of four boys, graduate of The University of Montana, animal lover and writer.
