University of Montana officials say the punishment for breaking the university’s student athlete code of conduct could be anything to scholarship loss to being kicked off the team.

However, UM athletic director Jim O’Day says the university will allow quarterback Nate Montana’s DUI arrest to play out through the court system before taking any action. O’Day says any discipline would be handled internally.

The son of NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana pleaded not guilty to charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding on Friday.

The 21-year-old Montana transferred from Notre Dame to the University of Montana in Missoula in February and is vying for the starting quarterback spot.
