Yoon Hee Cho, the woman whose distracted driving on April 1 led to the death of Hellgate High School student Chance Geery, was sentenced in Missoula Municipal Court on Thursday.

Deputy Missoula City Attorney Gary Henricks said Thursday afternoon that Cho pleaded guilty to all the misdemeanor charges against her.

“She was arraigned on charges of careless driving resulting in death, and driving on the sidewalk causing injury,” Henricks said. ” The careless driving charge carries a six-month jail sentence and a fine of up to $5,000. She was sentenced to six month in jail, with all but 30 days suspended. She will be able to spend that 30 days under house arrest.’

The fine of $5,000 will not be paid to the city.

“The family asked is there was any way rather then paying a fine, that she could contribute to a memorial scholarship fund in Chance Geery’s name,” Henricks said. “She said she would be more than happy to do that, so the plea agreement stated that she was sentenced to pay $5,000, but that would be offset dollar for dollar by any contribution she would make to the Chance Geery Memorial Scholarship Fund.”

Henricks said Ms Cho has reached out to the Geery family since the accident occurred on April 1.

“She has written letters of apology to the Geery family, and is deeply upset and sorry over what happened,” Henricks said. “I told the court today this is really a story that has no happy ending for anyone, and its a horrific experience for the Geery family and for her family, as well.”
