Square Enix's Murdered: Soul Suspect is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing and unique new titles on the 2014 release schedule. There’s less than two weeks until its June 3 release date, and to bring us up to speed, the PlayStation Blog has released a video that gives us a primer on the supernatural detective title.

Developed by Airtight Games and published by Square Enix, Murdered: Soul Suspect tells the story of Ronan O’Connor, a homicide detective with a shadowy past who is murdered by a ruthless killer known only as The Bell Killer. Now a ghost, Ronan wanders the streets of Salem, Massachusetts trying to solve his own murder and put an end to The Bell Killer’s string of brutal slayings.

As a ghost, Ronan exists in a shadowy realm called Dusk. He cannot interact directly with objects or people in the physical world, but his ghostly state affords him other abilities that will help him in his mission. Ronan can enter the mind of anyone he sees, reading their innermost thoughts and seeing the world through their eyes. He can even mind control cats, and can apparently use them to walk unseen past Demons, evil spirits than consume souls in the Dusk. Other powers, like teleportation and the ability to spook living people by “poltergeisting” in-world items, are also shown.

While most living characters can’t see or hear Ronan, he will have an ally on the other side. Joy, a psychic who witnessed Ronan’s death, will aid the protagonist, affecting change in the real world in his stead. Ronan will also encounter other lost souls who may need his help to move on to the next realm, but may also offer clues that help him in his investigation.

Murdered: Soul Suspect will be available for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC on June 3.
