I am a fan of the Walking Dead and have been for the entire series, but sometimes I have to wonder where the writers are going. Don't get me wrong, the reason I watch is because the storyline keeps sucking me in. But, sometimes it gets a little ridiculous. I was excited to hear Nine Inch Nails in the opening scene on last week's episode, but sometimes I can get a little too analytical.

{SPOILER}

For starters, I understand the family was mourning the death of Aiden and wanted to listen to his "Run Mix." But, the writers chose NIN "Somewhat Damaged" as track 1. To anyone who doesn't know the song, the dark tone doesn't seem to fit with the theme of the opening scene. But, if you pay close attention to the lyrics, it does sort of help set up the entire episode and recap Aiden's death.

"Somewhat Damaged" NIN

so impressed with all you do
tried so hard to be like you
flew too high and burnt the wing
lost my faith in everything

lick around divine debris
taste the wealth of hate in me
shedding skin succumb defeat
this machine is obsolete

made the choice to go away
drink the fountain of decay
tear a hole exquisite red
fuck the rest and stab it dead

broken bruised forgotten sore
too fucked up to care anymore
poisoned to my rotten core
too fucked up to care anymore

in the back off the side far away is a place where I hide where I
stay tried to say tried to ask I needed to all alone by myself where were you?
how could I ever think it's funny how everything that
swore it wouldn't change is different now just like you
would always say we'll make it through then my head fell apart and where were you?
how could I ever think it's funny how everything you swore would
never change is different now like you said you and me make it
through didn't quite fell apart where the fuck were you?

What I thought was funny about the scene was how awkward the montage was. Showing the Monroes sitting silently and listening, while making weird grimaces. Then flashing to Carol making a casserole, and Sasha taking a dump in the guard tower. Only to come back to the Monroes clutching pillows and demanding to turn the song off.

Bottom line, it is weird how deep the writers go in the show to set up the story. Even though you may think it is ridiculous, subconsciously it is genius and it keeps millions of people watching each week.

Now that we have established how big of a nerd I am, watch it for yourself.
