President Barack Obama was scheduled to speak this morning at a campaign stop in Fort Myers, Florida. Instead of speaking about his upcoming re-election campaign, he instead delivered a speech on the ‘Dark Knight Rises’ shooting in Aurora, Colorado.

President Obama apologized to the crowd for the grim town, saying he had anticipated a “fun” event for his many supporters who had stood by him. But instead, he took the next seven minutes commenting on the Colorado tragedy.

Said Obama during his speech:

The federal government stands ready to do whatever is necessary to bring whoever is responsible for this heinous crime to justice. We will take every step possible to ensure the safety of our people…Such violence, such evil is senseless. It’s beyond reason. But while we will never know fully what causes someone to take the life of another, we do know what makes life worth living. The people we lost in Aurora are loved and were loved. They were mothers and fathers. Husbands and wives. Sisters and brothers. Sons and daughters. Friends and neighbors. They had hopes for the future and dreams that were not fulfilled…Life is very fragile. Our time here is limited and it is precious. Ultimately it’s about how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another.
