Western Montana is on pace to make history this year, with what could be the driest summer in a century and according to Montana State Forester Bob Harrington, this hot, dry summer could lead to a record fire season as well.
A very warm high pressure system will begin to develop over the Northern Rockies this Friday and will bring record high temperatures this weekend through at least the end of June—temps that the month of June in Missoula and western Montana has never felt!
Growing up in eastern Montana, I am no stranger to rattlesnakes. I have been on archery hunting trips where we would spend the hot part of the day picking off rattlers with .22s or simply decapitating them with a shovel (<-dont try that at home.) But, scientists are saying that parts of Missoula may be experiencing a boom in the rattlesnake population.
