Pearl Jam Hit Halfway Mark on Next Album

Pearl Jam‘s next record may be a little bit further off than initially thought. Though Matt Cameron stated in an interview that he was recording drum parts prior to leaving for Soundgarden‘s tour in November, bassist Jeff Ament revealed that there’s still plenty of work to be done on their forthcoming release.

Speaking to Fuse in a video interview (seen below), Ament explains, “We’re halfway through. We have a ton of ideas. It’s just a matter of us, everybody clearing enough space to finish it up. The great thing at this point is we’re not really in a hurry to do anything. We kind of do things as naturally as we can.”

For instance, because of their pacing concerning the next record, Ament says they were able to accept the opportunity to play the recent Made in America festival after receiving an invite from Jay-Z. He adds, “Things come up and we can kind of pick and choose the fun things we want to do. Finishing the record’s taking a little bit of a backseat. It’s always worked better with us to take our time with things.”

One other “fun thing” on the horizon for the band is the group will play an event for Montana senator John Tester later this year. Ament reveals that he’s the connection, explaining, “I grew up in a small town of 800 people with John and so that’s going to be our big political event this year.”

As for any further reissues, the bassist says that they would like to do the next three records at some point, but adds that ‘Vs.’ and ‘Vitalogy’ were such an undertaking that they may hold off a bit. He adds, “It was starting to feel a little like we were starting to become a nostalgia band and we really don’t want to rely on that thing. We want to kind of keep focused forward.” Ament says that the new album is foremost on their minds and they want to proceed forward before revisiting the reissue campaign.
