Many Missoula first responders were in awe this morning after a horrifying head-on collision between a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle ended with no one needing to be rushed to an emergency room. Missoula Police Public Information officer Travis Welsh describes the crash, which occurred around 5:30 a.m.

"There was a small passenger car traveling northbound in the slower lane," Welsh said. "It moved into the outside faster lane, and, at some point, lost traction and began to drift into the southbound lane where it was struck by a south bound semi, in what has been described as a head-on collision. There was a leak of diesel fuel, about 100 gallons."

There were no passengers in either vehicle and neither of the male drivers needed to go to the hospital. Welsh said the fact that the passenger vehicle driver walked away with minor injuries was “amazing.”

"It was very surprising, very fortunate," Welsh said. "What's even more surprising is that the relative size and mass of vehicles involved resulted in well, just bumps and bruises. It was very fortunate, very amazing that we didn't have more serious injuries here."

The City of Missoula Street Department and the Health Department mitigated the diesel spill quickly and the road was reopened a little before 8:00 a.m.
