Rare Interviews Shine Spotlight on Nirvana

With the 20th anniversary of Nirvana‘s third and final studio album, ‘In Utero,’ having recently passed, it seems like tons of rare Nirvana gems have been flooding the Internet. Of course, we welcome and celebrate such revelations, including these three interviews just unearthed by journalist James Sherry.

These three Nirvana interviews are unique in that they span from the band’s relatively obscure underground days through becoming the biggest band in the world. Although the recordings of these three interviews were released via CD back in 2004, there’s a good chance you haven’t stumbled upon them. Now, more than two decades after the conversations took place, the Nirvana trilogy has been made available online for the first time by Sherry at Caught in the Crossfire.

The first interview Sherry conducted with all three Nirvana members took place in November 1990. At this point, the band’s debut album, ‘Bleach,’ had been out for over a year and drummer Dave Grohl has just joined the soon-to-be legendary grunge act. Recorded at the Metal Hammer offices, where James Sherry was working at the time, the 26-minute interview offers a look into the pre-’Nevermind’ days of Nirvana.

Sherry’s second Nirvana interview with Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl takes place in 1991, but before the enormous ‘Nevermind’ was unveiled in September of that year. Recorded in the summer, this chat took place in a pub named The Salutation on Hammersmith, London.

Finally, we have a post-’Nevermind’ interview with Krist Novoselic in 1992 shortly after Nirvana won Metal Hammer’s Best New Band award. This phone interview with Novoselic is the shortest of the three, but it remains fascinating as the bassist discusses the game-changing ‘Nevermind’ album along with Nirvana’s new found fame.
