Ravalli County Attorney Bill Fulbright has received the third and most recent update from the accounting firm of Anderson ZurMuehlen regarding the independent audit of the county treasurer's office.

Fulbright says there is a great deal of ongoing work being done to get the county's funds current and properly reconciled, while at the same time, keeping the day-to-day operations of Ravalli County going forward.

In the report, James Woy states...

We mailed a total of 78 Agency confirmations to all external and internal agencies of Ravalli County. As of March 27, 2014, a total of 27 have been returned. Of those received to date, there were 12 returned with exceptions. We are currently investigating the exceptions with personnel in the Treasurer’s office. A summary of all exceptions and their disposition will be provided in our final report. We plan to send second requests to those Agencies not responding by the end of the day today.

The Treasurer’s office has caught up with the backlog of work in the Treasurer’s office pertaining to receipting in deposits, posting activity including tax allocations, warrants and other disbursements of funds to Agencies of Ravalli County.

County personnel continues the time consuming and challenging task of completing all County cash account reconciliations current through January, 2014. As of March 27, 2014, cash reconciliations have been completed through September 2013. There are unreconciled differences that are still being investigated. We are overseeing this process and intend to opine on these reconciliations in our final report.

As of March 28, 2014, $952,372.78 of cash found in the Treasurer’s office has been receipted, deposited and posted. We will prepare a Schedule of all cash counted and deposited in our final report.

Woy writes that his firm has developed numerous internal control recommendations during its examination, and will communicate them to Fulbright in writing in their final report. He said he has verbally discussed some of the recommendations with county personnel for immediate implementation. He noted the importance of all agencies to prepare to respond to their confirmations once they are received.

On January 31, Fulbright announced that he had retained the firm of Anderson ZurMuehlen to conduct an independent audit of the Ravalli County Treasurer's Office, following controversy over interim treasurer Valerie Stamey.
