A fire in the 1100 block of Idaho street that spread from a fire pit to several outbuildings, a car and a motor home Friday evening sent a Missoula homeowner to St. Patrick Hospital is serious condition.

Assistant Chief Jeff Brandt with Missoula Fire said the incident was called in a few minutes after 6:00 p.m. Friday, resulted in plumes of thick, dark smoke, and was quickly extinguished within 15 to 20 minutes.

"The fire started in a fire pit, and spread to an alley and on to some adjacent outbuildings," Brandt said. " When crews arrived they found several outbuildings fully involved, a car on fire and the fire extending to an adjacent motor home. The homeowner sustained burns and smoke inhalation and he was transported to St. Pat's in serious condition."

Brandt said the man apparently went inside his home for a few minutes and left the fire unattended, and when he returned, it had spread beyond his control. He said every year the Fire Department responds to numerous fires, and that unattended fires can easily spread and cause damage and injuries. He said to make sure you have proper tools, a water source, and enough people to keep the fire under control.
