The death of soul singer Sharon Jones of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings has brought out displays of support via social media from throughout the music community. We’ve shared several of them, which include tributes from such names as St. Vincent, Chaka Khan and Jason Isbell, below.

Jones passed away yesterday (Nov. 18) at the age of 60 after a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer, ending one of the great musical success stories of the 21st century. A former corrections officer and wedding band singer from New York who had been told that she was “too old, too fat, too short and too black” to be famous, Jones didn’t get her break until her 40s, when she signed with Daptone Records and released Dap Dippin’ With Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings in 2002

Over the next 14 years, she and the Dap-Kings, a band that was created to back her up, put out a handful of albums and toured the world, bringing the horn-drenched sound of late-‘60s soul to generations of fans -- most of whom were too young to experience it first-hand -- and building a fanbase. At its core was Jones, singing tales of heartbreak, strength and resiliency while dancing up a storm. That spirit was displayed on the big screen when a documentary about her fight with cancer and comeback, Miss Sharon Jones!, was released in 2015.

Along the way, she picked up many admirers among her fellow musicians, and nearly every act today that borrows on retro-soul, from St. Paul and the Broken Bones to Leon Bridges, owes a debt to her. Read below to see what they had to say.
