On the first official day to file for elected office in Montana, Ravalli County is already assured of a primary race.

County Sheriff Chris Hoffman filed for County Commission District 3. He'll face J.R. Iman in the Republican primary. Iman, running for re-election, also filed Thursday.

Hoffman, who has served four terms as sheriff, said the current board of commissioners has not done a good job of overseeing county offices.

"Micro-management is negatively impacting all offices and departments," he said, "which in turn impacts our neighbors' quality of life." In a news release, he said his department has run well because he has hired qualified people, given them clear directions and let them do their jobs. He wants to bring the same philosophy to the commission.

The January 14 filing season opening day also saw Republican Greg Chilcott file for re-election to County Commission District 2 and Paige Trautwein put her name on the Republican ballot for re-election to Clerk of Court.
