Missoula Police utilized their SWAT team early Sunday morning in the apprehension of 26 year-old Missoula man accused of a fatal hit and run accident near Lowell School.

Sergeant Jerry Odlin said the initial call came in at about 2:30 a.m.

“Missoula Police officers responded to the area of Lowell School on Phillips Street for the report of an injured female lying on the roadway,” said Odlin. “Medical personnel determined that the 22 year-old female was deceased. Detectives, accident investigators and the Montana Highway Patrol were called out to assist in the investigation. It appeared that the female had been struck by a vehicle.”

Odlin said as part of the investigation, a search warrant was served in the area of North Russell, however special precautions were taken to ensure the safety of the officers and investigations involved.

“The Missoula City Police SWAT team was utilized in the service of that warrant,” he said. “26 year-old Missoula resident Daniel Grady has been arrested and booked into jail for the charges of negligent homicide, as well as failure to remain at the site of an injury crash. We use the SWAT team when there is information that it’s just too dangerous for the average patrol officer to respond to the warrant, because, obviously, the SWAT team has better training, better body armor, and both lethal and less-than-lethal at their disposal.

At this time Odlin said the Missoula County Coroner has not yet released the victim’s name in this fatal hit and run incident.

Grady is being held in the Missoula County Jail without bond until his Justice Court appearance on Monday.
