The Signal Grill – The Best Meal I Have Had in the Bitterroot Valley
My fiancé and I celebrated his birthday in the Bitterroot this year. He received a gift card to The Signal Grill inHamilton. After having a baby this summer, we were in desperate need of a date night. We live inMissoulaand have enjoyed many restaurants in town – from the local mom-and-pop joints to upscale white-linen spots. The Signal Grill served us the BEST meal we have ever had! From the service to the food, it was truly an experience we shall never forget.
From the moment we stepped in the door, we knew we were in for something special. We were starving and the aromas wafting from the kitchen were mind-blowing to say the least. The waitress was well-dressed, friendly, and seated us immediately. We disclosed that it was our first visit and she patiently went through the menu items with us and was un-biased in her opinions of the different dishes. In fact, she was such a good salesperson, that she talked me into ordering the chicken fried steak in a place that is KNOWN for their grilled beef steaks! My fiancé ordered a rib-eye with a loaded baked potato and a salad for an appetizer. I ordered my meal with garlic mashed potatoes and a side of clam chowder – although I almost went with the chili.
Our soup and salad arrived quickly and we were both sold from the first bite. The clam chowder surprised me – it was slow cooked with seasonings that made it very unique. I still can’t figure out what the flavors were, but it was hands-down the tastiest soup I have ever had. Even the 1000Islanddressing that came with my fiancé’s salad was homemade! Unbelievable! The servings were large – which we were stoked about.
After only a short wait, our main dishes arrived. My chicken fried steak came steaming in a cast iron pan, smothered with mashed potatoes and gravy – which we were told is made to order. We had made a deal before ordering that we were going to split our suppers half and half, which I was so thankful for, because his steak was to die for! It was not only cooked to perfection, but also, seasoned to a T. I can still taste it when I day dream about it. I started to get embarrassed – I couldn’t stop commenting to our waitress about how delicious everything was – and it seemed like she was used to hearing it. I felt I was acting like we had never had a good meal before!
The waitress overheard us talking about it being my fiancé’s birthday and she kindly offered us dessert on the house! I had never eaten crème brule, so we promptly ordered that. Since I have never had this treat before, I honestly cannot compare it to other restaurants’, but I believe it had to be the best ever made. I don’t think I ever stopped making “nom nom” noises.
We are both food and cooking fanatics and we were both completely impressed by The Signal. It’s been a week and I am still drooling.
