A transient wanted for raping two young girls on July 22 appeared in Missoula Justice Court on Monday, October 7 to hear the charges against him.

William Charles Stephens, 24, allegedly raped two girls, ages 13 and 14, who were runaways at the time under the Reserve Street bridge. Both girls have since been returned to their parents.

During his appearance in Missoula Justice Court via video from the Missoula County Jail, Deputy Missoula County Attorney Carla Painter requested that Judge John Odlin continue a high bail amount for Stephens.

"The state is requesting that we continue bail at $50,000 in this case," Painter said. "The defendant is a risk to the community and a flight risk, as well. If he does post bail, we ask for the standard conditions, along with GPS monitoring, and absolutely no contact with the victims."

Judge Odlin agreed, setting bail at $50,000.

Stephens told the judge he was homeless and jobless, and was given representation by a public defender. His next court appearance will be later this month in Missoula District Court.

The charge of sexual intercourse without consent carries a sentence of up to life in prison, and a fine of up to $50,000.
