Missoula police are reporting that a male transient was able to steal a city dump truck and make it all the way to Idaho last night, August 30.

According to Detective Sergeant Jim Klawitter, the report came in just before midnight and the truck was taken near the intersection of North Reserve Street and England Boulevard.

“There was a city work crew out doing some work and someone stole one of their dump trucks,” Klawitter said. “A short time later we got a call that a dump truck ran through a fence at Union Pacific and Clark Fork. We put out a BOLO for the vehicle for other law enforcement units to look for it.”

The missing vehicle search lasted about an hour before the vehicle was identified crossing the 4th of July pass.

“It was located at about one in the morning in Idaho, just over the pass in Idaho,” Klawitter said. “The suspect that was arrested driving the truck is a Vincent Taylor and he is addressed as a transient in Missoula. We are still getting information from Idaho.”

Klawitter says police are still investigating how the 40-year-old man was able to steal the dump truck and are looking into the total amount of damage caused.
