A day after word spread that Nine Inch Nails had a new song on the way, Trent Reznor has responded. His answer was simply, “Not true.”

Reznor gave the two-word answer in a tweet in response to a listing that surfaced on Discogs about a track called “Dive and Slam.” The four-minute-and-35-second song was given a release date on Columbia of Sept. 16.

A week before Christmas, Reznor promised — also in a tweet — something from Nine Inch Nails in 2016, as well as “other stuff, too.” Their last full-length of new studio material was 2013’s Hesitation Marks with a remix EP, Seed Eight, arriving in 2014. But he hasn’t been silent. Back in June, he and frequent collaborator Atticus Ross wrote “Juno” to celebrate NASA’s Juno spacecraft entering Jupiter’s orbit. The piece incorporated actual recordings of Jupiter’s electromagnetic fields.

He also put his name on an open letter signed by nearly 200 big names in the music industry, including Thom Yorke and Paul McCartney, demanding that Congress pass gun control legislation. The letter was inspired by the killing of 49 people at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla.

“Music always has been celebrated communally, on dancefloors and at concert halls. But this life-affirming ritual, like so many other daily experiences—going to school or church or work—now is threatened, because of gun violence in this country,” the letter read. “We call on Congress to do more to prevent the gun violence that kills more than 90 Americans every day and injures hundreds more.”
