Shalon Baker, 39, of Missoula, was charged with felony aggravated assault on Thursday afternoon (April 18) after allegedly choking his girlfriend, who is eight months pregnant.

Deputy Missoula County Attorney Suzy Boylen said in justice court on Thursday afternoon that due to the violent nature of the attack, she asked Judge Karen Orzech that bail be set in the amount of $100,000. Boylen said the young woman, who is eight months pregnant, is in the hospital and that Baker had tried to contact the alleged victim from the jail, though forbidden to do so.

Baker was a record-setting wide receiver for the Montana Grizzlies from 1991 to 1994, then was a wide receivers coach under former head coach Robin Pflugrad. He is no longer involved in the Grizzly football program.

Baker's attorney Paul Ryan asked Judge Orzech for a reduced bail amount because Baker has no criminal record, and that he be released on his own recognizance, so that he could continue in his present position as manager of Grizzly Liquor.

Judge Orzech continued Baker's bail at $100,000, and ordered him not to have any contact with the alleged victim. Baker remains in the Missoula County Jail.

Also arrested early Thursday morning was Sage Trotchie, 23, on similar charges. In a separate incident, Trotchie was charged with felony aggravated burglary, felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor criminal mischief.

Trotchie appeared in Missoula justice court on Thursday afternoon, and his bail was set at $100,000.
