Video Game-interupting Prank Turns into Swat Team Lockdown in Colorado

What was supposed to be a “harmless prank” turned into a full lockdown of a school and office building in Littleton, Colorado due to a full SWAT team investigation, and all of it stemmed from a guy broadcasting his Counter-Strike gameplay on Twitch.tv.

Kootra, founder of streaming group The Creatures, was playing Counter-Strike Global Offensive in an office in Littleton when SWAT teams suddenly kicked his door open, taking him into custody. The incident can be watched in the video above. According to Kotaku, authorities had received “an anonymous tip from someone claiming to have killed several of their co-workers and planted bombs inside the building where Mathewson resided.”

After the air had been cleared, the Littleton Police Department offered the following statement:

Littleton Police Detectives are investigating the origin of the 911 call received this morning regarding the reported shooting at 1221 West Mineral Avenue. The caller claimed to have shot two co-workers, held others hostage, and threatened to shoot them. He stated that if the officers entered he would shoot them as well. There were no victims or any evidence that a shooting had taken place. Fortunately there were no injuries today, but a massive law enforcement response wastes resources and greatly increases the chances of innocent people being injured or killed. If the investigation determines that today’s incident was a hoax, those involved will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Normally we’d have some kind of witty retort, but this kind of thing just isn’t funny. Whatever happened to ordering a bunch of pizzas in someone else’s name? At least all that wastes is food, not the time of law enforcement who may be distracted when a real situation is needed. We don’t know what to make of this, but we do know that it’s sad, atrocious and puts a horrible label on the gaming community.
