Vinny and Carmine Appice have done it all. At 60 and 70 years of age, respectively, the drumming brothers have just recorded their first album together, Sinister. We invited both drummers to join us for an episode of the Loudwire Podcast, where we spoke to them about jamming with legends, the evolution of hard rock and much more.

Vinny and Carmine actually play drums at the same time on many of these tracks, with one percussionist panned to the right and the other panned to the left. Carmine even sings lead vocals on the new track, “You Got Me Running.” Plenty of guest musicians make appearances on the record, such as former members of Dio, Guns N’ Roses, Ozzy Osbourne and other iconic acts.

This podcast is filled with amazing stories from the brothers, like the time Carmine and his Cactus bandmates almost got into a fight with Black Sabbath over a stolen bag of weed. Ozzy Osbourne and Cactus’ Rusty Day almost came to blows after a Cactus roadie was beaten up for his weed, and Carmine and Ozzy still reminisce about the tale to this day.

The brothers also spoke about how poor modern music is compared to the 20th century, even claiming that “there is no rock and roll” today. The two also worry about the lack of mainstream support for heavy music. “I don’t know who these bands are,” says Carmine. “All of a sudden they’re playing arenas. How did they get there? There’s no radio to listen to. People say to me, ‘How do you find new bands?’ I really don’t anymore. I used to drive in my car and put the radio on and hear new music.”
